New Year

December holidays are just over so I would like to write a few words about that.

Ghanaian celebrations of New Year and Christmas holidays are usually limited to church visits where they normally stay for the whole night. It is really nice to see women dressed in their traditional outfits since they really take care of their appearance for such occasions. Unlike us (Europeans/Slovenians) they have no special holiday dishes, neither they consider Christmas as a family holiday. However each and every one of them expects a Christmas present, for which they will be asking you till March.

In Barbara's village we try to prepare proper celebration of these holidays although they still differ from celebrations in Europe. Our cooks prepare a fantastic feast, with more than a meter long Barakuda fish stuffed with vegetable and sweet potato. We also serve with grilled lobsters, big roast, fried chicken, various side dishes, dips and salads. Instead of Slovenian traditional “potica” (look it up :) ) we prepare grilled pineapple with white rum and honey.

For entertainment we invite drummers and dancers who give us a spectacular show full of rhythms and dance. The reggae party after where guests dance the night away is simply unforgettable. The night is warm you can hear the sound of the ocean and the sky above is sprinkled with millions of stars. Also this kind of celebration is nice... My guests even say unforgettable.

This year’s celebration was more modest than previous ones because of fewer guests than years before. In spite all that we celebrated New Year with faith in better times.
